Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club, now Malta ’s leading multi-sports Club, was founded in August, 1975, and the 37 years that followed has been a period of continuous activity with the main aim of educating members through sport. The Club’s sporting activities varied along the years, with Club teams participating in amateur football, youth football (giving birth to the Birkirkara Football Youth Nursery), futsal, darts, table-tennis, athletics, cycling, swimming and triathlon. Football has been around for the Club’s whole life span, but it was triathlon that really put the Club on the local and international sporting scene. However open water swimming is quickly catching on, the Club being the only entity to organise the sport.Engaging a professional British coach at the end of 1994 for a number of years, Birkirkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club embarked on a wide programme which lead to the Club winning the National Triathlon Championship for a consecutive number of years, producing Malta ’s top triathletes in the process. Considering the genre of sport triathlon is, this is surely a very enviable feat, which will take a long time to surpass.
Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club does not only cater for top or elite athletes. Within its ranks there is quiet a variety of members coming from all walks of life. New members are always more then welcome. The Club is also an organizing entity in itself. Its long running Triathlon Series of Races is just one example. It organizes also a 5K Road Running Series, and open water swimming championships and long distance events. All these events are held under the auspices of the relative National Federations. The Club organizes also sporting events in conjunction with Local Councils and other sporting entities. Club members occupy administrative posts in various national associations, thus widening the Club’s experience in events organization.
The Club has had outstanding results over the years. In fact
Birkirkara St. Joseph was the first Club to grace the national Football Stadium in Ta’ Qali for the first ever competitive football match held there on Sunday 3 May 1981 (Malta Football Federation League Final vs. Valletta Vanguards)
Founded one of the first Football Youth Nurseries in 1981 which was transferred to Birkirkara F.C. in 1983
Birkirkara St. Joseph swimming teams swam around the whole Maltese archipelago (twice around Malta but excluding the island of Filfla due to Maltese Maritime Law)
The Club fielded athletes in extreme sports, achieving excellent results (Long Distance Triathlons, Marathons, Malta-Gozo-Malta swims, long distance swims, etc.)
Club members won the highest awards in local sports (Sportivi Nazzjonali)
Any one can be part of this success story. No matter what your sporting ability is, our Club will help you participate in the sport you prefer within our programmes. The Club’s annual membership fees range between €10 and €20 depending on the discipline, and club members benefit from special assistance in practicing their sport. Assistance to the Club in its administration and running of sports events are always more than welcome. We are always in need of marshals, time-keepers, helpers and fund-raisers. This side of the Club’s activities may be of particular interest to ex-sportspersons, retired people, or students undergoing a relative university course.
At Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club we value all our members and are proud of what we have achieved. We look at the future with optimism, and you can be part of this future.
